Working with money

How and when should I talk with a family about their money and where it goes?

Although workers sometimes feel uncomfortable talking about money, workers who are good at doing this say that discussing money is no different to raising any other issue.

Click below for some tips for how and when to talk with families about money matters:

  • Highlight ways in which you can help families who have money worries

  • Follow up money issues where they have been part of the referral

  • Highlight the financial side of issues that the family may be facing

  • Recognise that families may not feel comfortable talking about money until a trusting relationship has developed

  • Feedback observations about the family's money situation in a sensitive way

  • Accept that you cannot make a family discuss their financial situation or accept the help you think they need
