I get frustrated when I see people wasting money on cigarettes and other behaviours that do them harm
It can be frustrating when we see people make what we believe are poor judgements. But expressing that frustration directly rarely leads to positive behaviour change, and can get in the way of providing help for the things that families see as priorities for them.
It may be helpful to think about the following:
- In what way are the behaviours I find frustrating, seen as helpful by family members? For example, as a treat, as stress release, as making them acceptable to peers?
- Has there ever been a time when I behaved in ways that I would now be frustrated to see in others? What helped me to change?
- Do family members see these behaviours as possible to change?
