Information about consumer's rights

Consumer protection in Australia is the responsibility of both State and Federal governments. The Federal government is responsible for:

  • Business law
  • Financial services such as banks or finance agencies
  • Consumer protection policy.

Information about the Federal government’s role in protecting consumers, including the Consumer Handbook Online can be found at www.consumersonline.gov.au

Each State or Territory government has its own Consumer Agency, and laws will differ between the States and Territories. Examples of State responsibilities include:

  • Refunds entitlements
  • Product safety
  • Disputes with retailers
  • Protection from false advertising or unethical sales practices
  • Rental tenancies.
