Payment of Maternity Payment by Instalment
Although most parents are paid the maternity payment as a lump sum in some circumstances it may be paid in instalments. Where the child’s mother is aged 17 years or under, payment will be made by instalments unless there are special circumstances. Customers can also request payment by instalments if they would prefer.
If Centrelink staff believe that there are concerns about the vulnerability of a customer receiving a lump sum, they may refer the customer for an assessment by a specialist Centrelink staff member, and consideration can be given to payment by instalments.
